Yoga Basics

Yoga Den began offering this workshop in 2006. As more and more referrals from Doctors and Physical therapists were coming in,  we realized that some of these students needed specific modifications for safe practice. We were both surprised and pleased to see how many of our existing students signed up for the course, simply to fine tune their alignment, and to get a better understanding of the benefits of the postures. This is also the class that many of our beginners are wanting to start with.  This class is held in modular workshop format, with hands on with opportunity for Q's and A's, 6 different postures are learned each week, with a sample of how they flow together at the end of each class.  Yoga Basics is also offered on occasional Saturdays as a 3 hour workshop, and in private format which can be scheduled at your convenience.  Handouts are given to students so they can practice at home.  Call 268-8330 for dates and further information.

*The entire course can be covered in 2 hours in private lesson format, done all at once, or in 2 separate lessons.  The studio is open for these lessons during the weekdays beginning at 11am, and on weekends after 12pm.  We also offer private couple, family and/or group Basics lessons, however more time may be needed to make sure each individual gets quality attention.

The Direct Benefits of Yoga:

  • FLEXIBILITY

  • ENDURANCE

  • INCREASED STRENGTH

  • BETTER BALANCE

  • WEIGHT LOSS

  • RELAXATION

  • STRESS REDUCTION

THE CREATION OF INTERNAL HEAT PURIFIES MUSCLES AND ORGANS, EXPELLING UNWANTED TOXINS, AS WELL AS RELEASING BENEFICIAL HORMONES AND MINERALS INTO THE BLOODSTREAM.

IF YOU HAVE TRIED EVERY FORM OF EXERCISE AND CAN'T SEEM TO STAY MOTIVATED TO CONTINUE, YOU MUST TRY THIS 5,000-YEAR-OLD SYSTEM OF SELF-IMPROVEMENT!  THE WORD "YOGA" COMES FROM THE SANSKRIT YUJ, MEANING UNION.

YOGA IS THE UNION OF BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT.  OUR CLASSES HAVE NO RELIGIOUS TONES, WE WANT YOU TO FEEL COMFORTABLE AT ALL TIMES, AND TO UNDERSTAND THAT IN NO WAY ARE YOU COMPROMISING YOUR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS BY PARTICIPATING.

EVERY TIME YOU PRACTICE, YOU WORK TO BRING INTO BALANCE ALL BODILY SYSTEMS: MUSCULAR, SKELETAL, RESPIRATORY, CIRCULATORY, DIGESTIVE, NERVOUS, ENDOCRINE AND IMMUNE.

Benefits to increased warmth:

  •    Greater elasticity

  •    Helps to Cleans and detoxify  through sweating

  •    Less prone to injury

  •    Aids with relaxation

Benefits often associated with the regular practice of YOGA:

Increased energy, vitality and endurance

Stress Reduction: Stress reduction is a major benefit of Yoga.  Over tension of muscles increases stress, while stretching with breathing enhances greater relaxation.

Greater Flexibility:  Yoga helps  you to develop flexibility, which improves the range of your movements and the shock-absorbing efficiency of your body.  Over time, your movement patterns will become more fluid, allowing you to move with less effort and more grace.

Sharpened concentration: When practicing balancing postures, you will cultivate the ability to focus and concentrate for longer periods of time with less effort.

Enhanced lung capacity:
By learning yogic breathing techniques (pranayama) such as the Ujjayi, Dirgha and Kapalabhati breath, you will benefit in several ways: First, you will begin to stretch the connective tissue between the front, sides and back of your ribcage,  allowing you to take a deeper breath as you will have more room for lung expansion. Secondly, you will bring air to the farthest reaches of your lungs, gradually increasing the amount of air your lungs will be able to hold.  You will also learn to release all stale, residual air helping to cleanse and purify the lungs.  Finally, you will learn powerful breathing designed to strengthen the lungs and diaphragm.

Increased strength :
By using your own body weight and resistance to gravity, you will quickly gain full-body strength.

Muscle tone:  Stretching in the Yoga way enhances the tone of your muscles.  This gives you greater support and control even when you are at rest.  Good muscle tone is important to provide the body with good structural support at all times.  Yoga also avoids ungainly muscle growth.  When you stretch and strengthen at the same time, you lengthen your muscle fibers.  This gives the muscle a long, lean appearance.

Improved posture and body alignment:
When you incorporate the basic elements of Yoga into your exercise, you encourage your body to find it's natural alignment.  This means your most efficient posture in standing, sitting, and lying down positions.  As your muscles begin to balance themselves, there will be less stress placed on your joints, and your internal organs will work with greater ease.

All your muscles and joints will work more efficiently and there will be less wear and tear on the joints.  Mechanically, you move with less resistance when you are in proper alignment and this means your actions will be place less stress on your heart and lungs.  In addition, good alignment reduces the risk of ligament and joint injury while participating in athletic and sporting activities.

Increased balance: With a heightened sense of balance, you will avoid risk of injury as you become more steady on your feet.

Improved circulation:
The coordination of slow movements and breathing improves your circulation to particular parts of the body.  Different Yoga exercises work specifically to stimulate the circulation  to areas of the body that are under your control.  Better circulation improves general health.

Stimulation of the immune system and internal organs:
A stronger more relaxed body encourages a good immune system.  This is because the circulation of the lymph (fluid carrying white blood cells) relies on good muscle movement to pump it around the body.  Improved circulation will add to the effect.

...Heightened intuitive and body awareness

...Improvement in the quality of sleep

...Potential for personal growth and
Higher Intellect
